Join us for our monthly St. Pete Marketing Mastermind Breakfast at Ricky P's Orleans Bistro. Light breakfast and coffee will be served. This month's presentation is Why Use Hashtags.

Hashtags are ubiquitous not only on Twitter, but on other social networks from Facebook to Google+ to Instagram. Members use them to chronicle events from international news stories, celebrity appearances, and for individual users’ daily activities.

Once you start using Twitter, Facebook, or any other popular social network, it doesn’t take long to discover the hashtag: a word or phrase in the middle of a tweet or a Facebook update that starts with the hash or pound symbol # and refers to anything from a breaking news event to an upcoming holiday to the latest celebrity scandal. If you’ve ever wondered what hashtags are, how they work, why everyone is using them, and how to use hashtags in your posts, we’ve got some answers for you.

Hashtags now go beyond being used only for discovering the latest trending topics. They can now add value to your SEO campaign and, by using them properly on social media, you can drive long-term, steady referral traffic back to your site. Google has even begun incorporating hashtags into search results in a unique way. Now, searching for a hashtag on Google will not only give you a list of search results, but will also include a live scrolling feed of Google+ posts containing that hashtag and links to other hashtag feeds on other social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.
