About Our Host:
Founded in 1973, The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research (LEITR) is the largest eye bank, tissue recovery and ocular research center in the world. Since it’s inception LEITR has provided the gift of sight the gift of sight to 160,000 men, women and children around the world. Our work includes cornea and tissue recovery, cornea preparation, research, surgeon training, and innovative technologies driven by the needs of patients and their surgeons. In 2018 we began recovering life-enhancing tissues needed by millions of patients each year for various surgical procedures related to trauma, sports-related injuries, coverage following third degree burns and other procedures that have helped over 32,000 people. LEITR is also dedicated to the ocular health of our nation’s children and through the LEITR Foundation has launched three vision health programs: the Association for Pediatric Vision, the Mobile Vision Clinic and the LEITR Vision Screening Program. As the operator the Glazer Foundation’s Mobile Vision program, we regularly schedule visits for the Mobile Vision Clinic and brings doctors and eye care specialists, along with an on-site prescription lens lab and a full selection of eyeglass frames to schools and communities throughout Tampa Bay. All of this is possible through collaboration with our partners: tissue donors and their families, healthcare professionals, scientists, surgeons and generous philanthropists.
